Views of Acropolis

Athens Free Tour | Views of Acropolis

Our next stop is one you really could not miss while visiting Athens and one we would not omit during our walking tour. From this point, one can have a prime view of the Acropolis. The Acropolis is the most important ancient site in the Western world. Crowned by the Parthenon, it stands sentinel over Athens, visible from almost everywhere within the city. The word acropolis translates to Greek as "the edge of the city" as the citadel towers over the capital of Greece. The site contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, from the Propylaea, the Erechtheum and the Temple of Athena Nike to the Parthenon itself, most of which were made in the 5th century BC by Pericles during the golden age of Athens. Its monuments and sanctuaries of white Pentelic marble gleam in the midday sun and gradually take on a honey hue as the sun sinks, while at night they stand brilliantly illuminated above the city. The site has been immortalized by painters and poets alike with many writing odes about its beauty.
"Earth proudly wears the Parthenon as the best gem upon her zone"
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1857
